Research and application of information technology for bus travel in Macao is based on the integration of multitudes of advanced technologies including high-precision positioning technology under the complex conditions of dense buildings and electromagnetic signals, information reminding technology of intelligent bus travel perception, high-precision bus arrival information technology under complex scenarios, high-peak and high-traffic data processing and display technology. It solved the problems of low positioning accuracy, inaccurate bus arrival information, lack of information-based aids for visually impaired people taking bus, and difficulties in data processing in high-peak and high-traffic scenarios in complex situations. The system related to the applied research has been successfully deployed. Through this system, the efficiency of the government supervision of public transportation services and operations has been significantly improved. In addition, the accessibility to public transportation travel information is facilitated. Moreover, barrier-free transportation has been effectively promoted. These all reflect the core value of people-oriented development of intelligent transportation. Benefiting the majority of Macao citizens and tourists, the “Bus Traveling System” App supported by the application research of this project has a maximum of more than 110,000 daily active users, becoming one of the most widely used apps in Macao. Furthermore, a number of technological outcomes of this project have been used in many cities in China.
